Its January in Erie County and life at Burch Farms has slowed down. All of the crops were harvested and we have begun planning for the up and coming year.
However, the farm continues to be a busy place! We are still packing apples 2 days a week. The McIntosh, Cortland, and Gala are beginning to get a little bit softer but the flavor is absolutely fantastic. They cook up wonderful and make the best apple sauce you've ever tasted. If you don't have time to make your own than just stop in at the market and get a jar of our homemade applesauce.
The other varieties of apples we still have are Empire, Red Delicious, Northern Spy, Crispin, and Idared. All of them are still hard and crunchy with great flavor.
I have been asked numerous times in the past month why people can not find Burch's apples in Giant Eagle or Wegmans: Well, these stores do not want any more local apples. They have decided to buy all their pples through their warehouse and not carry local apples any longer. So if you want Burch's apples in your local grocery store you neeed to tell the manager or produce department that they need to carry apples from Burch Farms. The more people let them know the better our voices will be heard.
In the meantime Burch Farms Country Market is open 7 days a week, 7am - 6pm Monday thru Saturday and 8am - 5 pm on Sunday. All 9 varieties of apples are available daily. If you mention you saw this on our website the cashier will take $2 off your purchase of apples!
Out on the Farm we are prunning grapes and apples. We are also working at undecorating the trails from our horse drawn sleigh rides. The sleigh rides were so popular this year we had to hire a second team of horses to keep up with reservations. Thank you to ALL who celebrated Christmas with us!
We are looking forward to this weekend with our Blue-Eyed Husky Winter Weekend. Our Siberian huskies will be at the market for all to meet. There will also be numerous doggie treats made fresh from our bakery for your dog. The most important news is on Saturday and Sunday you can sample our Ice wine and 3 other varieties FREE! Also, remember Saturday and Sunday ONLY you can purchase our Blue-Eyed Husky Ice Wine for $20 per bottle with no limit to the number of bottles purchased. That's a savings of $10 per bottle!
Also on Sundays in January we have our Soup and Salad Buffet with a glass of Niagra Wine from 11am to 3 pm. Our featured soup this week is New England Clam Chowder, cost is $10 per person and includes soup, salad, fresh baked rolls and croutons, and don't forget your complimentary glass of Niagra with your lunch! Stop out enjoy our Winter weekend celebrations and grab a bite, sit down and visit awhile! We'd love it if you joined us!
Lastly, I want to mention we have begun putting the schedule together for our pancake breakfast in celebration of Maple Syrup Season. We are scheduling Non- Profit Groups to host each day of the breakfasts. The Non-Profits sell pre-sold tickets and help us serve the day of their scheduled breakfast. They serve and clean tables to earn money for their non-profit. It's a great and delicious way to fundraise! Please call the Market, go to our contact form on the website, or send us an email to get details on signing your group up. Dates go fast so get in touch soon!
